The Portuguese Multiple Sclerosis Society (Sociedade Portuguesa de Esclerose Múltipla — SPEM), founded in 1984, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with Multiple Sclerosis, their families, and caregivers.

SPEM was one of the first backers of the Gregory-MS project and continues to support the Brain Regeneration Observatory through institutional partnership and access to its community of patients and professionals.

SPEM operates across several complementary areas:

  • Advocating with public authorities and relevant bodies — particularly in health and social protection — to ensure effective support for patients and access to therapies.
  • Providing integrated, multidisciplinary support through specialised social intervention and rehabilitation services.
  • Promoting information, awareness, and empowerment among patients, families, caregivers, and civil society regarding the disease and its impact.

Present from the north to the south of Portugal, SPEM reaches an ever-growing number of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Internationally, it represents Portugal in the European Multiple Sclerosis Platform (EMSP) and the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF).

SPEM is recognised as a Non-Governmental Organisation for People with Disabilities (ONGPD) and a Health User Defence Association (ADUS).
